Bun & Bolt ● 01–05

Ideas you can get your hands on.

We’re two friends making original interactive experiences for the web.

Some ideas become clearer when you try them yourself. Change a parameter and watch a mathematical shape respond. Draw a groove in sand and see it settle. Stack generations of cells and discover the shape their history leaves behind.

Bun & Bolt is our collection of visual mathematics, 3D simulations, interactive stories, and browser games. Each piece has its own question, its own way to play, and a process of experimentation behind it.

    Visual Mathematics

    Give an idea a shape

An interactive mathematics dictionary covering functions, geometry, calculus, probability, fractals, and dynamical systems. Each page explores one concept, bringing explanations and live graphics together so you can investigate how they relate.

For anyone looking to build mathematical intuition, revisit a concept, or follow an intriguing shape somewhere new.

    Kinetic Sand Table

Make a mark. Watch it change.

A 3D sand table in your browser. Draw, dig, and pile sand with a finger, rake, or spoon, then let the rotating arm gradually smooth the surface. Each tool gives you a different way to work with the same material.

There’s no score and no finish line. Make something intricate, or just play for a while.

Works with a mouse or touchscreen. Requires a browser with WebGPU support.

    Game of Life

    Watch time become a sculpture

We turn the evolution of Conway’s Game of Life into a three-dimensional structure. Each layer is a generation; the top is now. Rotate the sculpture to trace the history held in its shape.

An exploration of simple rules and complex patterns. Still in development, with a preview available to explore.

    Pool

Turn a gesture into a little performance

A playful 3D swimming pool. Pick up a swimmer, throw them into the water, and see what the judges think. Or explore formations that turn the pool into a stage.

The fun is in the movement, the splash, and what happens next. Open it in your browser and try something.

    2026 World Cup

Put the numbers on the same scale

Lamine Yamal, Lionel Messi, and Vozinha: three players with very different careers. Put their market values on a balance, compare their follower counts on a shared axis, and follow their stories through time.

An interactive football data story that makes differences in scale visible and tangible. The piece includes its data verification date and source notes.

How a piece takes shape

It starts with a question of our own.

We choose something we want to explore, then work out how to express it. What interaction makes a mathematical concept easier to see? How should sand respond to a hand moving across it? How do you make a difference of several thousand times feel meaningful?

Those decisions give each piece its form. We design the visuals, interactions, and pacing around the subject.

Research becomes part of the design.

For work involving mathematics, science, or real-world data, we consult relevant references and check definitions, rules, and figures. Then we work out how to turn that material into an experience someone can explore.

We also care about the boundaries of a model: which rules it follows, what it leaves out, and where artistic interpretation comes in. A compelling 3D scene can help explain an idea; its accuracy still needs to be checked.

We refine it by using it.

We test calculations and interaction logic, then keep working on the visuals, feedback, and experience across different screen sizes. How a drag feels, whether a change is easy to follow, and when an explanation appears all matter.

Each finished piece is the result of those decisions and revisions accumulating over time.
